Pine Parenthood

Q: Hello, I live in Northern Wisconsin, when is the best time of the year to transplant a white pine, early spring or late fall? Thank you.

A: It's a toss-up! Wet, off-again on-again Spring weather makes tree planting difficult but it really depends on the size of the tree. If the tree is already three feet are taller, plant it in the late fall while the ground is still easy to work then mulch it well. If the tree is small, the Spring is better because it's tender. A harsh winter is more apt to harm a small tree.
