What to feed baby spiders?

Posted by Sarah on August 3, 2003

Q: I had a pet spider that laid eggs. Then she died. The babies have hatche. What should I feed them?

Thanks,

Sarah

A: It's very common for the female to die after she has laid her eggs. It's normal and I hope you aren't upset by this.

The best thing you can do for the babies is to release them outside. The babies need to find places where they can begin feeding on their own - they're much too small for you to find appropriate food.

Many spiders balloon to find new places to live and my guess is that your babies will do this if placed outside. Spiders balloon by releasing enough silk from their bodies so a breeze can whisk them up into the air. Spiders actually fly through the air and can get to all kinds of places this way. Spiders are often one of the first kind of animal to reach young islands because they are able to travel by ballooning. Good luck with your baby spiders.
