frogs

Q: I live in eastern Pa and recently saw a small (about 3 in) frog that was completely orange. What kind of from was it? It was on a path in a wooded area near a small swamp.

Habitat: forest/open woods

A: Your description of an "orange" frog through me off at first but on second thought, I realized that The Wood Frog (Rana sylvatica) must be the frog you saw. Wood Frogs do vary in color and some individuals are orangish. Wood Frogs do have a black mask on their face too so I hope you remember seeing that also. At this time of year, these frogs have warmed enough to leave their hibernation areas and are traveling to ponds for breeding. Their calls sound a bit like ducks quacking, not very pretty but it suits their purpose. Take a look at this site www.fcps.k12.va.us and although the color may not be right on I think you'll find that this is your frog. Thanks for asking.
