Q: can you get a ponderosa pine branch trimming to root by placing it in water or moist dirt or do they only start from seed???

Habitat: suburban/yard

State: Oregon

A: It's a shame but you can't get the pines to grow from cuttings - they're much more finicky than deciduous trees. You're going to have to start with a seed, or better yet, get a small nursery-grown plant. Ponderosa Pines are wonderful trees and although I live in New York State far from their normal range, I have one as a bonsai - I love them. Hope this helps.
