Identify a snake

Q: What kind of snake is it? 18 to 24 inches in lenth, diameter of a pencil. All black but with one yellow pinstrip full length from head to tail. Found in backyard in Corvallis, Oregon.

A: Sounds like a garter snake to me. There are several species of garter snake in Oregon, however, so it would be difficult to tell you which species it was — my guess would be the [url link=darkwing.uoregon.edu/~titus/herp/sirtalis.html]Common Garter Snake[/url].
