Are these eggs of some kind?

Q: We just put in a pond in September and I found long jelly-like "rope" with black specks in it wrapped around grass in the water. I am thinking these are some kind of eggs.

A: It's a little difficult to see your photo clearly but I'm quite sure these are eggs as you suspect. These look very much like toad eggs although toads lay two strands of black eggs (one strand from left and right ovary) but I can't tell if there are two in the photo. Both the American and Fowler's Toads are common in Ohio but the American Toad comes out of hibernation a bit earlier than the Fowler's so I'm guessing that your eggs are that of the American Toad. Thanks for asking.
