Conks

Q: Is there any type of tree in particular that the conks tend to form on more than others?
Habitat: forest/open woods
State: New York

A: Your question is one I didn't have an immediate answer for so I had to do some research. From what I was able to find, all trees are probably susceptible to some kind of conk fungal invasion. Many of the conks are rather species specific - primarily infecting one or two species but they may infect other species in some cases. It seems that the biggest factor that "invites" a conk/fungal invasion is some kind of damage, like a wound, to a tree that allows spores to enter and begin growth there. So to answer your question specifically, I'd say no one species is more likely to have conks than another. Hope this helps.
