Snake Identification

Posted by Lester Aseere on May 8, 2008

Q: Hello,

I have a rather large (5 foot) snake living under my porch in Elbert County, Colorado (zip 80138). He is about 1.25" in diameter, light brown with diamond shaped lines across the body. His head is the same size as his body. I can never see his tail as he suns himself with the tail still inside the porch.

I have some good pictures. Can I send you a picture for your opinion?

Thanks,

Les

A: I couldn't see the snake really well in your photo but it does help, -thanks for sending. It looks like a Bullsnake (Pituophis melanoleucus) to me. This is a non-poisonous snake and a very good rodent catcher. If you can get a good look at its head, you should see a dark band from its eye to the angle of its jaw. I'd say you're fortunate to have this animal taking up residence at your home. I realize this can be a bit scary for some people, because of its size, but I think you can coexist with this guy without any problems.

Thanks for asking.
