A Little Bit More
July 2007 statement from the Union of Concerned Scientists
“Global warming is one of the most serious challenges facing us today. To protect the health and economic well-being of current and future generations, we must reduce our emissions of heat-trapping gases by using the technology, know-how, and practical solutions already at our disposal.”
Although 100% of the scientific community may not believe global warming is being influenced by humans, the percentage who do is so great that most of the world’s governments are no longer pretending. If humans have caused/contributed to this environmental problem, then humans must be the solution.
In today’s modern society, we’ve become so accustomed to having all of the wonderful things that technology brings, that we can’t imagine or aren’t willing to go back to a simpler and less-energy dependent time. As a result, it’s a really hard “sell” to get people to even consider reducing their energy demands. This then is why the use of CFL lightbulbs makes so much sense – we can have our cake and eat it too! Please consider doing you part.

We’re not in the habit of endorsing products or services on the Enaturalist website, but this particular opportunity seems much too valuable not to share. The Lights for Learning Program is a fundraising program that students can use to both educate the public about energy-saving while raising funds that can be used for school projects. At present, this program is being endorsed and supported by both Illinois and Connecticut-based utilities but is expected to expand into other states as the program becomes better known. Your school can take advantage of this great project.
